In the historic town of Sivasagar, the Sibsagar Girls’ College came into existence in the year of 1964 with the noble aim of educating the female population in the district of Sivasagar. Now it is a premier educational institution for women in the district of Sivasagar. The department of Assamese was initiated in the year of establishment of the college. Honours (Major) course has been introduced in 1966. The department of Assamese has its own glorious history of 58 years. In the year 2022 the department has initiated MA in Assamese under Dibrugarh University vide letter no. DU/RG/IOC/2022/PG/Permission/SGC/1392 dated 16.06.2022.
Ms. Anima Bharali and Ms. Minati Bezbaruah were the founder teachers of the department. The other dedicated lecturers who had already retired from their services are Drunakanta Kalita, Mrs. Jamuna Borgohain, Ms. Ekhudi Duwarah, Ms Monowara Begum and Mr Ranjit Ranjan Tamuli.
