About The Department

In the historic town of Sivasagar, the Sivasagar girls' College was established in the year of 1964 with the noble aim of educating the female population in the District. The department of Education is an important part of Sibsagar Girls’ College since its establishment. In the initial stage, the subject Education was offered as pass course subject in B.A. programme. Since 1967, the department has been offering Education as a major course to the students. The Department has been showing excellence in the academic performance as well as sports and co-curricular activities. The then Vice-Principal, Miss Nilima Baruah, was the first Lecturer to head the Department of Education. Miss Baruah managed the Department from the day of its inception till her demise in 1987. At present the department has four permanent faculty members and two contractual teachers for vocational courses.
The courses offered by the Department are: CBCS Honours and Generic, Skill Enhancement Course (SEC). Apart from the regular courses, at present the department offers two six months vocational courses - i) Montessori Teachers’ Training Programme and (ii) Beauty and Wellness. The department believes in flexibility where the students can enroll in vocational courses along with the major courses.

As an integral part of the Sibsagar Girls College, the department of Education endeavors all efforts towards achieving the ultimate goal of the esteemed institution. Our vision is to be the leading department amongst all the departments of Education under the Dibrugarh University and the Gauhati University of Assam. We provide quality education to students by finding out their innate potentialities in a true sense. We also focus on equipping students with knowledge and skills, inculcate value based education, developing leadership qualities, innovative talents, critical thinking, adjustment abilities, building self-confidence and overall multifaceted development such as academic, physical, mental, emotional, moral and aesthetic as well. As we belong to merely single sex higher educational institution i.e., women institution, we strive for empowering and strengthening our students in all aspects so that they become full-fledged women having all qualities in future. Over and above we envision enhancing our reputation as a world class teaching, learning and research based department with the help of establishing a good rapport between and among the students, guardians, faculties, staffs, administrators, community and all stake holders
